UK SHOPPING GUIDE / FINGERS

Buying finger tape? Read the small print before the small roll arrives.

You lend someone “a little bit” of tape. They return the cardboard middle.

Time to restock. But before you order whatever looks familiar, check what you’re actually buying. Finger tape for BJJ and Judo comes in different widths, fabrics and roll lengths—and the photograph doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Three rolls. Three different formats.

Here are three options in the Grappler’s Repair Shop Fingers collection:

Three finger tape options: roll sizes and details to compare
TapeRoll sizeWhat to compare
SPORTTAPE white zinc oxide2.5cm × 10mCotton fabric; the narrower of these three rolls
SPORTTAPE tan zinc oxide3.8cm × 10mRayon fabric; broader rigid strapping
Qualicare zinc oxide7.5cm × 10mA broad roll you can tear into narrower strips by hand

Those measurements describe the roll, not how much tape to put around a finger. Choose the width for the application you have been shown and how you prefer to prepare the tape. A bigger roll is not automatically a better fit for your fingers.

7.5cm? For fingers?

Yes—the roll is wide, but your strips don’t have to be.

Qualicare’s 7.5cm × 10m zinc oxide tape is hand-tearable across the width and along the length. You can prepare narrower strips without scissors. It’s an option for people who prefer tearing their own widths; a narrower roll may be more convenient if you want less preparation.

Check the exact variant before ordering. “Zinc oxide tape” on its own doesn’t confirm that every product tears the same way.

White or tan: there’s more to it than matching your gi

For these SPORTTAPE products, white uses cotton and tan uses rayon. SPORTTAPE describes the cotton as lighter and more pliable, and the rayon as having higher tensile strength. Choose according to the product’s intended application rather than the colour alone. These details apply to those products; white and tan do not tell you how every brand’s tape is made.

Both are rigid strapping tapes. Stretchy tape and adjustable finger wraps are different formats, so compare their intended uses separately.

Ten metres. One roll. Read both bits.

All three options above are 10 metres long. That’s twice the length of a 5-metre roll. It doesn’t automatically make one the better buy: width, fabric, price and the number of rolls supplied still matter.

Our linked options are single rolls. Count the rolls in the selected pack description, not in the photograph. Your basket should contain tape, not optimism.

To compare value, divide the price by the total metres in the pack, then compare rolls of similar width. A wider roll is a different format, so price per metre alone doesn’t settle the choice.

The check before checkout

  • Width: is it the roll size you intended to buy?
  • Hand-tearability: can it tear in the direction you need?
  • Length and quantity: how many metres per roll, and how many rolls in the pack?
  • Materials: what does the maker say about fabric, adhesive and allergies?
  • Intended use: does it suit the application you have been shown and your event’s rules?

Read allergy information for the exact product. The linked Qualicare roll’s latex status and full backing composition have not been confirmed, so do not assume it is latex-free or hypoallergenic.

Follow the maker’s instructions and appropriate application advice; remove tape for numbness, tingling, colour change or skin irritation. Do not use it to train through an unassessed injury.

For competition, check the current rules for your sport and event, including restrictions on tape, padding and application. Something everyone does in training isn’t automatically permitted in competition.
